N64 Best of: Super Smash Bros.!

This is the game that started a revolution in fighting games; Nintendo has done it all, added a serious player in every game genre and why not tackle fighting games?   And they did it in the most baller way possible: chocked it full of your favorite Nintendo characters!   This company cross promotes like nobody’s business.    So, how good is the game?  It was a smash (pun intended) hit when it came out but how does it play now?

The basic gameplay is a journey through your typical fighting game tournament; but they did something more fun here; some levels you play 18 Yoshi’s that are easy to Knock Out, you may fight a gigantic size Donkey Kong, plus those fun bonus levels (that aren’t that fun here) like in most fighting games.     But Smash did something different as well; you aren’t fighting guys with just a power bar; you have a percentage meter and there’s no sure fire percentage that guarantees a win, so you’re never truly out of a Smash game; you also get the option to jump back onto the match once you’re knocked away, and some characters jump back better (Kirby) and some can knock away stronger (DK).   There’s so much nuance to this game, it really elevates above almost everything else in the fighting genre.

Don’t forget about the 4 player battles; an awesome feature that added so much playability to this game and turned it into the ultimate party game!     Take into account you could also unlock secret characters and customize your whole fighting experience with weapons, no weapons, certain weapons, everything about the game changed fighting games going forward.

The only knock against it is the graphics; you either loved or lived with the N64 look.   I was never a huge fan, and now I think it’s one of the worst looking graphics engine for any game when you go back and look at it.   Also, it shouldnt’ count against this game, but Super Smash has maintained a very similar tournament scheme with every game and only ever improved upon the original formula, so there really isn’t much reason to go back and visit this one, unless you’re filled with nostalgia for it.
