After the Event (Issue #4) Ralph & Sue Dibny (1 of 4)

Inside a packed garage, sitting at a cluttered desk, Ralph Dibny sits, reviewing paperwork in front of him.

Case File# 35980-DO dated 07/28/13

Cameron Dodd, 37, found a “green shard” (pictured included in file) on his way home from work a month ago. He resides in Coast City, and since then has witnessed (4) incidents, 3 are closely related and took place on the same date (07/14/13).

Incident #1: on said date of discovery (06/30/13) Dodd touched the “green shard” to the dome around Coast City and “absorbed” a 3′ x 5.5′ inch diameter square from the dome.

Incident #2-3: (07/14/13) by mere thought, a “green” spoon and “green” hairbrush appeared as Dodd was readying his child, one Tyler Dodd (aged 9) for school in the morning. As quick and unexplainable as they appeared…

He stops reading as his wife Sue brings in a cup of coffee to him.

“Thanks honey. Is Ralphie junior in bed yet?”

She nods quietly as he takes a sip and sets the cup down in the same place, he always places it in, then peers back at the file.

…they vanished. Also on that morning, Incident #4 (07/14/13) a fellow parent at his son’s school, one Winston Elementary School, said parent tripped and fell over unknown “green-looking” object. Dodd made it a point to inform that he had words with that parent only moments before.

Thoughts: After inspecting the fragment myself, it seems too large to have been a part of a ring issued by the Green Lantern Corps, as I have seen several of them up close. That being said, these phenomena cannot be explained in many other ways as I’m led to believe this item has some relevance to do with the same material the Lantern rings are made from.

File Update #1: (07/31/13) Client Cameron Dodd phoned this morning to inform me that he in fact, flew today. The “green fragment” was in his pocket at the time of the flight and was witnessed by his son, Tyler Dodd. He was very frightened. This most definitely sounds of behavior from a Green Lantern ring but how is Dodd performing these tasks without the forethought to do it? A Lantern’s ring power is based on the will of its wielder; perhaps there is a stronger will inside Dodd than he realizes. Suggest a psychiatric evaluation and have Sue draw up the paperwork. Perhaps the Event will need to be examined more closely.

Ralph digs through an old cabinet off to his right and fishes out a file folder marked “Confidential.”

Case Study for Case #35980-DO: The Event

One year ago, Hal Jordan, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, began emitting a green ray over the hub of our city, Metropolis, and declared that he would cleanse our world of all its sins. He was assailed by two heroes, one Superman and one Flash, who together were able to stop Jordan’s assault against the city and its heroes. (Insert deceased list in file here). As witnessed by several thousand people, Hal Jordan, Superman and Jordan’s ring (the weapon) were all destroyed in one bright explosion of epic proportions over the sun. Residual effects have been felt in the water supply (but cleared up in April of this year), the year’s crops, topography of outlaying cities around Metropolis as well as unusual effects on super powered beings are beginning to crop up (research more on this topic later). Hal Jordan, by eyewitness reports, was said to have been attempting to create a “dome” for the rest of the country as he did six years prior in Coast City, his hometown (note: add small description of Coast City incident)

Seeing as he had not completed this part of the file, Ralph cued up his typewriter.

****Note: Synopsis of Coast City Incident, dated 03/24/2007

Coast City was under attack from an unknown alien creature (later referred to as Doomsday). He caused over forty billion dollars in structure and roadway damage, as well as untold dollars in lost wages, insurance claims for damage and lost business income but also the deaths of twenty-seven Coast City citizens. The Justice League (team of super-powered beings put together for to protect the citizens of Earth, stopped this threat but not before losing one of their own (Ice)). Hal Jordan incinerated the monster’s head after it was captured for questioning and was put on League hiatus (Note: members of that current League)-

***Members at the time of the Coast City Incident: Superman, Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan, The Flash, Fire, Ice, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Green Arrow***

Later, evidence came to light that Lex Luthor, after a failed mission piloting his own space station, discovered the creature and brought him to Earth to help stage a false coup of governmental control. Damning audio evidence and a few of his own personal notes were enough to convict Luthor for the crimes perpetrated by the monster. He was sentenced to 30 life sentences in maximum security prison where he is the only inmate (Metropolis). Hal Jordan, during his leave of absence from the League, suffered a serious mental breakdown and the resulting behavior led to Coast City being encapsulated in a green dome made of permanent material from the Green Lantern’s light. (Note: could this “fragment” Dodd found be more of this material, in perhaps a hardened form, now taking on the properties of the dome left there by Jordan?)

***Update: 08/04/13: traveled to Metropolis today to speak with Lex Luthor but was denied entry. Also traveled to speak with James Gordon, former commissioner of the Gotham Police Department, now retired in Metropolis. He was brought in as a special investigator in the Doomsday incident. The following is an excerpt from that interview: (complete tapes filed in red box)

Excerpt #1: “Coast City looked like it had been nuked from the inside out; buildings turned into sand in a kid’s play box, cars crumpled like tin cans; it was madness. I got one glimpse of the monster when we had a SWAT team in place to deter it; he tore through our team like a bull in a China shop. That’s when we let the big boys take over.”

Excerpt #2: “Luthor was the one, there’s no doubt even though he had pleaded his innocence ever since.”

Excerpt #3: “No, the file and testimony’s been sealed away since but there were not files. Nothing like that. His undoing was his bodyguard, Ms. Mercy Graves. She sold him up the river as long as she could be witness relocated. She gave us not just his little pet monster scheme but a whole host of others we couldn’t’ tell the public about or they’d freak. This guy had a laundry list of evil plans and that’s why he’s serving all those sentences consecutively.”

Excerpt #4: “I moved here three years back, had to leave town when Jordan lost his marbles and have moved back since. I left Gotham City because there wasn’t a city left. Too many whackos going unchecked when Batman vanished. I couldn’t handle them all…Luthor’s behind the most sophisticated prison system in the world, cameras watching his every tiny move, four layers of titanium reinforced steel on all corners of him, the most highly trained guards and military personnel watching him day and night, and I’d feel safer sleeping in an alley with a bag full of cash next to me in Gotham than I do some nights in my own home here in Metropolis.”
